Common Myths about Receiving the Flu SHot

MYTH:
The flu shot will make me sick.

FACT:
The influenza vaccine contains a non-infectious virus, so it can't give you the flu. If you feel sick soon after getting the flu shot, it's likely from a different infection that the vaccine doesn't protect against.
MYTH:
Getting vaccinated guarantees I can't get the flu.

FACT:
After vaccination, it takes up to two weeks to develop immunity to the flu. During this period, you can still get sick. Although vaccination doesn't guarantee immunity, it significantly reduces the risk of severe illness if you do get the flu.
MYTH:
I never get sick so I don't need the flu shot.

FACT:
Babies and the elderly are at higher risk of hospitalization from the flu, but anyone can catch it, leading to multiple missed days from work.
MYTH:
I got a flu shot and still got the flu.

FACT:
While the flu shot does not guarantee immunity from the flu, it significantly lowers your risk. Even if you do contract the flu after receiving the shot, it reduces the likelihood of severe illness.
MYTH:
The flu is like a bad cold.

FACT:
Flu symptoms, initially resembling a severe cold (sore throat, runny nose, cough, fever, and body aches), lead to around 25,000 deaths and 390,000 hospitalizations annually in the U.S.
