Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex. ED is very common affecting 30 million men in the United States. If the problem persists, it can often cause relationship issues. You are more likely to develop ED issues as you age, if you have certain diseases, take certain medications, have certain health related issues or have psychological or emotional issues.
If you have any issues with ED, its a good time to make an appointment with a urologist. During your initial exam, your urologist will go over your medical history and your symptoms to decide which treatment will work best for you. There are many treatment options that include medication, counseling and surgery.

Frequent Urination Due to Enlarged Prostate & BPH Treatments
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Do you have trouble urinating or emptying your bladder?
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is the enlargement of the prostate gland that is not cancerous. The prostate undergoes two main growth periods as a man ages. The first occurs during puberty when the prostate doubles in size. The second period begins around the age of 25 and continues during most of the man’s life. As the prostate gland enlarges it pinches the urethra impeding the expulsion of urine. The enlargement can also cause a weakening of the bladder causing the bladder to not completely empty during urination. BPH is the most common prostate condition in men over the age of 50 affecting more than 14 million men in the United states. For many men, the symptoms of BPH can lead to disruptive sleep, urinary tract infections, bladder damage, kidney damage and bladder stones.
BPH Symptoms
- Urinary frequency – urinating eight or more times per day
- Urinary urgency – the inability to delay urination
- Trouble starting a urine stream
- Weak or interrupted urine stream
- Dribbling at the end of urination
- Frequent urination during periods of sleep
- Urinary incontinence
- Pain after ejaculation or during urination
- Urine that has an unusual smell or color
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
There are many options for treating BPH that depend on the severity of your symptoms and prior resistance to other treatments.
Lifestyle Modifitcation
Your urologist can work with you to come up with a treatment plan that consists of some or all of the following.
- Reduce intake of liquids especially when going out in public and before sleep
- Avoiding or reducing the consumption of caffeinated drinks or alcohol
- Avoiding certain medications including decongestants, antihistamines, antidepressants and diuretics
- Training the bladder to hold more urine for longer periods
- Exercising pelvic floor muscles
- Preventing or treating constipation
Medications
Your urologist can prescribe medications that will stop the growth or shrink the prostate to help reduce symptoms of BPH.
- Alpha Blockers which relax the smooth muscles of the prostate and bladder neck to improve urine flow.
- Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors are typically prescribed for erectile dysfunction, but can also work by relaxing smooth muscles in the lower urinary tract.
- 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors which blocks the production of DHT, that can accumulate in the prostate and may cause prostate growth. These medications can stop prostate growth and decrease the size of the prostate in some men.
- Combination Medications Some studies have shown greater effectiveness by combining two classes of medications instead of just one.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
- HoLEP procedure uses a light beam to peel tissue and hollow out the prostate. This can lead to improved urine flow and reduction of the pressure on the bladder. The procedure takes about three hours.
- TURP procedure a urologist inserts a resectoscope through the urethra and cuts away parts of the prostate with a wire loop. Special fluid carries the pieces into the bladder which is then flushed out at the end of the procedure.
- UroLift is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. The urologist inserts implants that hold the prostate away from the urethra relieving urine blockage.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should make an appointment with our team. There are a several treatment options available including lifestyle modification, medications and surgical treatments. During your initial visit, your urologist will do a physical exam and go through treatment options that will work best for you.
