Newborn Safety System CertaScan Technologies

CertaScan Technologies allows Bozeman Health to capture high resolution newborn footprints which can be used for precise identification in situations like an abduction, lost baby or natural disaster.

The Newborn Safety System — which uses LiveScan Technology — has garnered the attention and praise from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and has been included as a recommendation for hospitals in its most recent Infant Security Guidelines.

The System is entirely safe for use on babies and provides outstanding footprint quality. The digital foot prints and security photo can be stored efficiently in the newborn’s electronic medical record. And, much like finger prints, foot prints are a biometric, unique to each baby, so they can be used for identification throughout a lifetime.

Each new parent receives an attractive certificate of her newborn’s footprint during their stay. When they return home, they can visit www.firstfootprint.com to enhance the certificate with colors, different fonts and borders. They can also download a digital copy of their baby’s footprint.

Bozeman Health has access to the da Vinci® Surgical System in our operating rooms making surgical procedures less invasive and facilitating faster recovery times. Robotic surgery represents a significant advancement from traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy.

Breast Surgery

(Bozeman Health is the only location in Montana providing the services below)

Dr. Shauna Werth Kronfuss is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and fellowship trained in breast oncology surgery. She is one of two physicians in Montana with this specialized training. She provides surgical treatment for patients with breast cancer and other non-cancerous breast conditions. Dr. Werth Kronfuss works closely with the breast team in Advanced Medical Imaging as well as the Bozeman Health Cancer Center, helping patients navigate breast cancer treatment.

In the Fall of 2023, Dr. Werth Kronfuss recruited highly specialized microvascular reconstructive plastic surgeons from Texas, Dr. Ted Nagel and Dr. Nabil Habash, to perform autologous free flap breast reconstruction surgery at Bozeman Health. This surgery utilizes a patient’s own skin and subcutaneous tissue from the abdomen, thigh or buttocks area to build new breasts after a mastectomy. This is a newer and more natural alternative to implant-based reconstruction, which is also available at Deaconess. We are the first and only hospital in Montana that offers free flap breast reconstruction. This is a tremendous benefit to the community because patients able to receive care that used to require out of state travel, close to home!

In order to preserve as much healthy breast tissue as possible, a lumpectomy involves removing the tumor along with some surrounding tissue.

What to anticipate from Bozeman Health:

  • Consultations before to surgery: Talking through your options with a group of medical professionals, such as oncologists and surgeons
  • Surgical expertise:The technique is carried out by knowledgeable surgeons who prioritize the comfort and safety of their patients.
  • Follow-Up Care: Assistance following surgery to track healing and address any side effects.
  • Support Services:  Availability of tools including dietary advice, support networks, and learning materials.

A Mastectomy is the surgical removal of one or both breasts, usually for the purpose of treating or preventing breast cancer.

Here are some basic expectations for mastectomies at Bozeman Health:

  • Consultation: A multidisciplinary team meets with patients to go over treatment choices and choose the best course of action based on their unique requirements.
  • Surgical Care: Skilled physicians execute the process with a focus on the security and well-being of the patient.
  • Reconstructive alternatives: Following a mastectomy, those who would like to learn more about their alternatives can do so by obtaining information about breast reconstruction.
  • Support Services: Having access to resources for emotional health and rehabilitation, counseling, and support groups.

Pregnancy & Prenatal Care

You can rely on us for comprehensive pregnancy support when you need it. Our services include:

  • Caring and informed discussions with your OB-GYN regarding difficulty to conceive
  • Identification of factors that may put your pregnancy in a high-risk category such as age or underlying health concerns
  • Family Birth Center tour
  • Childbirth education class
  • Prenatal breastfeeding education

Prenatal Education

Before a mom-to-be is admitted to the Family Birth Center, she has many decisions to make. We ensure you are aware of your choices, help you with making those decisions and work hard to fulfill your wishes. We offer tours, education, breastfeeding courses, and sibling classes. Prospective parent tours, visiting our birthing and postpartum rooms with customized beds and other comforts, are offered every month.

A childbirth course is taught by experienced nurses, covering prenatal health and the challenges of pregnancy, caring for a newborn, and everything in between. Prenatal breastfeeding classes taught by certified lactation counselors include tips and techniques for successfully feeding your newborn. A new baby also means life changes for older siblings, so we offer classes for expectant brothers and sisters, which cover what they can expect and how they can help.

Setting up Prenatal Care

Visit the Family Birth Center Health Education and events page to review and sign up for the classes we offer, including childbirth and prenatal breastfeeding classes, tours, and other family classes. Or call 406-414-5578 for more information.

Choosing a Provider for Your Baby

During your hospital stay your newborn will be looked after by the hospital’s on-call pediatrician. After your discharge from the hospital, you will need to make an appointment with a pediatrician or provider of your choice for follow-up care for your baby. Our Bozeman Health Pediatrics team would be happy to talk with you about your needs. Meet our pediatricians here.

Labor & Delivery

Our approach to your care is family-centered, considering the needs of every family member while focusing on mother and baby. We want to help you and your loved ones celebrate this new addition to your family with comfort and confidence. Our eight private birth suites provide a soothing environment, are fully equipped with comfortable birthing beds and other technology to help with delivery, feature entertainment systems, and several have spa tubs.

More than a dozen board-certified OB-GYN physicians and certified nurse midwives, along with several family medicine physicians and over 100 nurses, assist in the birth of babies at Bozeman Health Family Birth Center. Many of our nurses have completed specialized education and achieved national certification in their fields. We offer personal, intimate care for expectant and new mothers, as well as for babies born needing specialized care, and for healthy babies.

The Family Birth Center staff offer stress-reducing options such as a whirlpool spa, aromatherapy and a variety of ways to help control pain. We provide wireless fetal vital sign monitoring so you are not confined to bed. We provide care from experienced, understanding nurses who remain with you through delivery.

  • Six comfortable and high-tech birthing rooms
  • Surgical suites within the Family Birth Center dedicated to labor and delivery for cesarean births
  • Jacuzzi tubs
  • Nitrous oxide
  • Lactation support: (406) 414-2474
  • Breastfeeding pod locations
  • Nursery: (406) 414-2440

Our nurses will guide you to find positions that get your baby into the right position, offer breathing techniques to stay focused, and suggest alternative comfort measures like massage. Round-the-clock anesthesia coverage is available in the event that pain medication is desired.

OB EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT (OB ED) care is provided in our Labor and Delivery unit by OB-GYNs, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Registered Nurses (RNs). Pregnant patients who are 20 weeks or more along are seen in our OB ED for urgent pregnancy-related concerns. These concerns include, but are not limited to, vaginal bleeding, decreased fetal movement, abdominal pain, ruptured membranes or high blood pressure.

After-Hours Entrance

Access to the OB ED in the Family Birth Center after hours is through the main Emergency Department entrance. Pregnant women under 20 weeks gestation and those with non-obstetrical concerns, such as a fracture or laceration, will be cared for in the main emergency department. Pregnant patients at or beyond 20 weeks along in their pregnancy or postpartum, with a primary obstetrical acute concern, will be directed to the OB ED.

Diagnostic & Treatment

Some of what we offer includes:

  • Ultrasound to check fetal well-being, amount of amniotic fluid, head position/placement, and more.
  • Vitamin K is given at delivery to help prevent bleeding in the newborn.
  • Parents can choose to start hepatitis immunization series on their newborn.
  • Telemedicine consultation with heart-lung specialists when needed.
  • Hearing screening and audiology referral if necessary.

Screening Saves Lives from Breast Cancer

Contributions to the Bozeman Health Foundation Mammogram Project Fund provide no-fee mammogram and diagnostic services to women in-need in our local community. Women face many barriers to accessing mammograms and the follow-up diagnostic services they need including lack of insurance coverage for services, many cannot afford the cost of screening or a diagnostic test so delay care, or they don’t qualify for government programs or require a service not covered.

Philanthropy plays a vital role in helping women overcome these barriers to receiving the life-saving care they need.
Since launching in 1997, the Mammography Project Fund has supported hundreds of women in our community with access to mammograms and diagnostic services.

Nearly 1,000 women in Montana will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, according to the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide and is the second leading cause of cancer death in American women, runner up to lung cancer. However, in recent years the rate has decreased – a decline believed to be the result of increased awareness, improved treatment options, and notably and equally important: early detection.

Help Support Women in Need

Together we can improve health and well-being for women in our local community. Bozeman Health Foundation works to ensure that life-saving breast cancer screening and diagnostic serves are available to every woman in our region who needs it, regardless of income and insurance status.

The Foundation partners with Advanced Medical Imaging, Bozeman Health Cancer Center and the Bozeman Health Community Benefit program, to ensure vouchers and resources are available to women every step of the way, especially if cancer is detected.

Please join our efforts today and help us help women in our southwest Montana communities for years to come. Your gift to the Mammogram Project will make early detection possible for women in-need.

The Bozeman Health Mammogram Project gives women an opportunity to receive a free or low-cost mammogram at Bozeman Health. It is our goal to make this lifesaving detection procedure available to all women, regardless of their income or health insurance status.

You may be eligible for the program even if you have health insurance.

If a Mammogram, MRI or Ultrasound reveals the presence of a mass or suspicious breast tissue, a biopsy may be performed to determine whether or not cancer is present. Taking these tissue samples using modern procedures involves using detailed image guidance to precisely locate the target tissue and accurately guide the biopsy instruments, which is much less invasive than open surgical biopsies performed in the past.

Several biopsy methods are available: stereotactic breast biopsies, ultrasound-guided breast biopsies and MRI-guided breast biopsies. In all of the procedures, tissue samples are extracted through a hollow needle, sometimes with a vacuum-assisted device, rather than through a surgical incision.

Genetic Counseling

Specialized services for individuals identified as high risk for breast cancer.

These services typically include:

  • Risk Assessment: Comprehensive evaluations to determine individual risk factors, including family history and genetic predispositions.
  • Screening Recommendations: Tailored screening plans that may involve earlier or more frequent mammograms, MRI screenings, and clinical exams.
  • Genetic Testing: Offering tests for hereditary breast cancer genes (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2) to help inform prevention strategies.
  • Preventive Measures: Discussions around lifestyle modifications, medications (like tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors), and surgical options for those at very high risk.
  • Support Services: Access to counseling and support groups to assist individuals in managing their health and emotional well-being.

A sentinel node biopsy is typically obtained with both lumpectomies and mastectomies. This biopsy is used to see whether cancer cells have spread to the lymph nodes. In sentinel node biopsy, a tracer material helps the surgeon find the first few lymph nodes to which cancer may spread. Typically, one to three lymph nodes are removed for further testing.

Following this portion of breast surgery, Bozeman Health offers support services including rehabilitation services from our lymphedema specialist for women following lymph removal. Treatments include specialized massage, compression garments and exercise programs.

Support The Mammogram Project
Mammograms can help reduce breast cancer related deaths by detecting breast cancer early. Current health guidelines recommend that yearly mammography screening begin at age 45, or earlier if there is a history of breast cancer in the family. The Mammogram Project seeks to make lifesaving mammogram screening services available to all. Our goal is to increase access to lifesaving detection procedure available to all, regardless of income or insurance status. You may be eligible for the program even if you have health insurance.
