John How, AICP, joined the Bozeman Health Board of Directors in 2019 and was elected Chair in October 2022. He is the chair of the Executive, Governance and Compliance Committees. A certified planner through the American Institute of Certified Planners, John brings extensive expertise in strategic planning and facilities management. He currently serves as Associate Vice President of Facilities Management at Montana State University.
A Bozeman resident since 2012, John is committed to supporting the long-term health of the community by helping ensure Bozeman Health’s continued independence, financial strength, and ability to deliver high-quality care to all individuals in our community.
Becky Franks joined the Bozeman Health Board of Directors in 2022 and serves as Vice Chair of the Board and serves on both the Executive and Governance Committees. She brings more than 30 years of experience in public health and health care policy, along with a deep passion for community wellbeing. For 18 years, Becky led the Cancer Support Community as CEO, while also serving on the Gallatin County Board of Health—six of those years as Chair.
Her work has always centered on using her business acumen and leadership to develop solutions that improve teams, organizations and communities. Becky’s decision to serve on the Bozeman Health board comes from a lifelong commitment to improving health outcomes and supporting smart, strategic growth. She’s excited to help guide the organization as it plans for the future and continues to meet the needs of a growing community.
Jim Berend joined the Bozeman Health board in 2022 and serves on the Executive Committee and as chair of the Finance & Strategy Committee. With more than 40 years of experience as a finance executive in the health care industry, Jim brings deep expertise to his board role. His passion for the Bozeman community inspired him to give back through service to the health system.
After first visiting the area to fly fish in Yellowstone National Park, Jim and his wife purchased a home here in 2008. He now splits his time between Bozeman and Texas. He is committed to ensuring that the board keeps the needs of the Bozeman community at the forefront and guides the health system’s growth in alignment with the region’s rapid development.
Elizabeth Carver joined the Bozeman Health Board of Directors in 2021 and currently serves as Chair of the Governance Committee. Now retired, Liz had a distinguished legal career as both in-house and outside counsel for health care systems in the Rocky Mountain West and Midwest.
With deep roots in health care—her parents served as an Army hospital administrator and hospital dietitian, and her husband is a physician—Liz brings a lifelong understanding of health care systems. She is passionate about supporting Bozeman Health’s efforts to remain competitive and responsive to the evolving health care needs of the community.
Jon Knokey joined the Bozeman Health Board of Directors in 2022 and currently serves as chair of the Compliance Committee, vice chair of the Finance & Strategy Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee. He brings a diverse background in public service, health care leadership, and business investment to his role, drawing on his experience as a former state legislator and executive in the investment industry.
A proud Montana State University graduate and longtime Bozeman resident, Jon is deeply committed to the belief that a strong community health system is essential to the overall success and well-being of the region.
Vickie Groeneweg, RN, joined the Bozeman Health board in 2023 and serves as chair of the Quality & Safety Committee. She brings over 30 years of nursing experience at Bozeman Health, including 14 years as Chief Nursing Officer before retiring in 2021. Vickie began her career with the organization in 1989 after relocating to Bozeman with her family.
Her deep connection to Bozeman Health and the community inspired her to join the board, where she applies her clinical expertise and leadership background to support a culture of quality and safety. Vickie views her role as a collaborative partner in shaping the organization’s future to ensure it remains responsive to the evolving needs of the community.
Meghan Johnston, MD, joined the Bozeman Health board in 2023 and serves as vice chair of the Quality & Safety Committee. She is a physician at Bozeman Health’s Internal Medicine Clinic and a graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine, where she completed both the Global and Hispanic Health tracks, along with a residency in internal medicine.
As a care team member, teacher of medical students and a parent of young children in Bozeman, Meghan offers a valuable perspective that helps ensure board decisions reflect the culture of Bozeman Health and the needs of the broader community.
Kim Scurry joined the Bozeman Health board in 2024 and serves on the Finance & Strategy and Compliance Committees. Kim brings a strong background in technology operations from her career with RightNow Technologies and Oracle. She also ran her own consulting business, gaining valuable experience as a small business owner. Since retiring, Kim has dedicated her time to volunteering with organizations that support at-risk youth—a cause she cares deeply about.
As a member of the United Methodist Church, she values the opportunity to contribute to Bozeman Health by applying her professional expertise to support the organization’s growth and maintain the longstanding Methodist relationship. Kim is excited about the health system’s future and appreciates her role as a board member to help shape its strategic direction.
David Crites, MD, joined the Bozeman Health board in 2024 and serves on the Governance Committee. He began working at Bozeman Health as a hospitalist in 2012 and has held various medical staff leadership roles since 2014.
Dr. Crites brings extensive clinical experience and a strong historical perspective as a long-time physician leader—insights that help guide the board’s efforts to support Bozeman Health’s growth and maintain its local, independent governance.
Abe Ferreyra joined the Bozeman Health board in 2024 and serves on the Finance & Strategy Committee. He is the owner and managing partner of Manhattan Plumbing & Heating, as well as several other construction and property management businesses across Montana. Originally from Veracruz, Mexico, Abe gained permanent residency and moved to the Gallatin Valley in 2003.
Grateful for the opportunities the community offered him as a newcomer, he is committed to giving back through his board service and is especially passionate about improving education and health care access for the Hispanic community. Abe is honored to serve the community and contribute to the long-term strength and success of Bozeman Health.
Cory Pulfrey joined the Bozeman Health Board of Directors in 2023 and serves on the Finance & Strategy Committee and is the vice chair of the Investment Oversight subcommittee. Cory brings extensive financial management experience from his career with Chevron, Weyerhaeuser, and Morgan Stanley. He is currently a partner at Cloverlay, a private equity investment firm.
A Montana native and Montana State University graduate, Cory is deeply committed to giving back to his community and actively supports Bozeman Health’s continued growth and success.
Alyce Schultz, RN, PhD, FAAN, joined the Bozeman Health board in 2020. She serves on the Quality and Safety Committee and is vice chair of the Compliance Committee. A registered nurse with a PhD in Nursing, Alyce brings decades of experience in clinical care, research, and global consulting. She previously led a nursing research center in Maine and was associate director of an evidence-based research center at Arizona State University, and a Fulbright Scholar in clinical research and evidence-based practice.
From 2001–2019, she taught and consulted nationally and internationally. Alyce joined the board to ensure the nursing perspective informs organizational decisions and is passionate about advancing quality and safety in healthcare.

Reverend Dr. Sara Taylor Lattimore joined the Bozeman Health Board of Directors in 2024, appointed by the Mountain Sky Conference of the United Methodist Church. She holds the designated clergy seat and serves on the Governance Committee. Working in the non-profit sector and church ministries for 18 years, she has been ordained as a pastor and currently leads churches in Three Forks, Willow Creek, and Belgrade, Montana.
Since moving to Gallatin County in 2022, Sara has valued Bozeman Health’s personalized care and is dedicated to helping address community needs with a holistic approach.
Dan Taft joined the Bozeman Health Board of Directors in 2025 and also serves on the Bozeman Health Foundation Board. A retired executive from the oil and gas industry, Dan brings a wealth of expertise in safety, systems management, and strategic planning to his board roles. Following his retirement, he and his family made Big Sky their full-time home, where he became actively involved in the community through the Big Sky Medical Center Community Council.
Dan is deeply committed to leveraging his professional background to support the region’s health care system, ensuring it remains strong, resilient, and well-prepared for sustainable growth.

To request an appointment, simply click the button below and you will be contacted to schedule your next steps. If you are inquiring about spine surgery, you will need to have your primary care provider make a referral to Dr. Ben Smith with Bridger Orthopedic.
