What Are Gynecologic Cancers?
Gynecologic Cancers Affect the Reproductive Organs and Include:
- Cervical Cancer
- Uterine (Endometrial) Cancer
- Ovarian Cancer
- Vaginal Cancer
- Vulvar Cancer
- Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding or Discharge (especially after menopause)
- Pelvic Pain or Pressure
- Bloating or Feeling Full Quickly
- Frequent or Urgent Urination
- Constipation
- Itching, Burning, or Changes in Vulvar Skin

When Should You Consider Gynecologic Cancer Screening?
Based on your age and risk factors, you should consider the following:

Cervical Cancer
When to Start: Begin screening at age 21, regardless of sexual activity -
Ages 21 - 29:
Pap Test (Cytology) every 3 years -
Ages 30 - 65: Choose one of the following:
1) Primary HPV test every 5 years (preferred)
2) Co-testing (HPV + Pap) every 5 years
3) Pap test alone every 3 years -
Over 65:
Stop screening if you’ve had normal results for the past 10 years and no history of cervical pre-cancer. Continue screening if you’ve had abnormal results or pre-cancer for at least 20 years.
Uterine (Endometrial) Cancer
When to Screen:
- No routine screening for average-risk women
- At menopause, all women should be informed about symptoms:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- High-risk women (e.g., with Lynch syndrome or family history) may need annual endometrial biopsies
Ovarian, Vaginal & Vulvar Cancers
- No standard screening tests for these cancers.
- Regular pelvic exams and awareness of symptoms are key.
- Ovarian: Bloating, abdominal pain, urinary urgency
- Vaginal/Vulvar: Itching, burning, skin changes, lumps
